At each month’s member dinner, HBA of Western Michigan honors a Student-of-the-Month from one of its region’s high school construction trades programs. The student attends with his or her family, and the program’s director and instructor. In a five-minute ceremony, the student is called to the podium and the President recognizes the student’s achievements, and presents a $50 gift card to an area big box home improvement store provided by a sponsor.
HBA of Western Michigan is also actively involved in the planning of MI Career Quest Southwest, an annual touch-and-feel event that attracts roughly 4,000 8th graders each November. Students come by bus to the county’s expo facility where they interact with a wide range of career displays including healthcare, law enforcement, aviation and manufacturing. The HBA’s ground level roof allows students the opportunity to put on a hardhat and safety glasses and hammer nails into the roof. Each year this is the expo’s loudest and most popular attraction, with lots of one-on-one interaction with HBA members.
