2018is a HUGE election year in the state of Michigan. As the summer months turn into fall, campaigns around the state will be in full force. It is being predicted that 4.2 MILLION voters are going to show up at the ballot box to cast their vote for everything from the Governor’s office down the ticket and for the ballot initiatives that are on the ballot. Keep in mind, just over 2 MILLION voters went to the ballot box in August.
As a result of term limits, on January 1, 2019 there will be a new Governor, new Lt. Governor, new Attorney General and a new Secretary of State. Joining them will be 42 (out of 110) new state Representatives (at a minimum) and 27 (out of 38) new state Senators (at a minimum).
The match up for governor is between Bill Schuette, the Republican and Gretchen Whitmer, the Democrat. Each of them has selected a running mate for Lt. Governor. Bill Schuette chose Lisa Lyons and Gretchen Whitmer chose Garlin Gilchrist.
In the race for Attorney General the match-up is Tom Leonard, the Republican, and Dana Nessel, the Democrat. And finally for Secretary of State, you will choose between Mary Treder Lang, the Republican and Jocelyn Benson, the Democrat. These candidates were selected at the party conventions.
The results from the November election will set the stage for the 2019/2020 legislative session. Just like building a house costs money, so does electing candidates who will be supportive of YOU and the residential construction industry. Your state association has had great success in recent years impacting policy changes that benefit our industry. We cannot afford to move backward and need to support those who support housing.
If you haven’t made your voluntary contribution to Friends of Housing in the amount of $100.00 (or more), please consider making a contribution today.
