DEVELOPING THE WORKFORCE OF THE FUTURE—HBA OF SAGINAW
SPOTLIGHT: SAGINAW AREA CAREER TECH CENTER -Building Construction

For nearly four years the Home Builders Association of Michigan has made building awareness about workforce needs a primary focus. Schools and training organizations have taken note (as have leaders at our state capitol who’ve increased funding and support for these efforts). HBAs around the state have followed suit and virtually all have engaged with local educators. In this issue of Michigan Builder, we’re spotlighting the significant work being done by our local association in Saginaw.

Home Building/Renovation Project(s)

This year the Saginaw Building Construction program built the Christmas float for Saginaw Pride. They built sheds, picnic tables, and each student framed a wall with a window opening. They installed plumbing and electrical in their walls and used it for drywall lessons too. They learned to lay up block and brick. They also learned how to stake out a house and use a builder’s lever to fine grades and level sites. They are looking at building an actual home in the future with the help of the HBA.
